Birdhouse or Bust

This time of year it's dark & grey & generally not so nice in New England. I'm in the process of actually willing Spring to come. I just bought 160 gladiolus bulbs (ambitious, much?), I'm about to order my bees, & I'm carefully watching our crocuses as they come up inch by inch. Yesterday I went to the Home Depot to buy some paint for our breakfast nook (finally) and walked through the bird section while the paint was being mixed. A yard full of colorful birds seems super spring-y to me, so why not add some fine feathered friends into my please-is-it-spring-yet projects?

I'm starting to shop around for the right birdhouse:

This first one is really function over fashion, but it looks like it would do the trick (of tricking birds to hang out near my home).

I like this rustic little saltbox birdhouse, but I'm wondering if it looks too much like my actual house...

Sweet and simple... but, oh, it's $250... moving on...

This airstream trailer birdfeeder is so not my style, but it's grown on me.  A lot.  I think it would be a colorful contrast to our grey Cape.  But if I were a squirrel, I would totally set up shop inside this thing, so maybe it's not my best bet.

Any thoughts?  Let me know and stay homey!

  1. I think the second one is so dang cute but I think you're right about the first one.....it's more functional. I'm so excited to read about your bee keeping journey!! The neighbor across the street from my parents house keeps bees. He gives us a huge jar of honey each year and its the bombdiggity!!

  2. That trailer one cracks me up but I would be nervous about squirrels, too. I love that mini house one, although I may be biased. I was inspired by a similar bird house when it came to designing a cardbox for our wedding.
