Happy 2013!

Happy New Year!  (Boy, is New Year's Eve a whole different game when you can't guzzle champagne... I was in bed by 11 and actually feel good today!  As one of my Facebook friends said this morning, "The air up here is sweeter on my non-hungover high horse".  I'm afraid it's true.)

Always interested in superstitions and traditions, I read online that it's a Dutch tradition to eat donuts and other ring shaped foods on New Year's Day to symbolize coming full circle.  It's funny how you can use the internet to justify just about anything... including donuts for breakfast this morning:

Every January first, my father cooks up a pot of Hoppin' Johns, a traditional Southern New Year's Day dish made with black eyed peas, rice, and ham.  Pork, it seems, is a consistent theme for New Year's Day food and is believed to bring prosperity.  Luckily, Jaisa has got you covered on pork recipes.  Vegetarians, do not despair.  Eat donuts instead.

What will you be eating today?  Any New Year's Day traditions to share?  Have a great year and stay hungry!
