Winter Sangria

Ah, Friday.  Oh how happy I am to see you.  Because it's January and it's going to be subzero in Chicago any day now, I thought a nice Winter Sangria, although served chilled, would help heat us up from the inside out and make life a little more bearable.

This drink recipe is so easy and will make your guests feel extra special.  Plus, it's so beautiful and bright.  Basically the opposite of Chicago right now.

I saw this recipe in a grocery store catalog in Minnesota.  I normally think of Sangria when it's warm out, but adding the cinnamon and star anise helps make this drink more season.

I love cinnamon. It helps bring out the spicy notes in the wine.

I've never used star anise but I think I'm going to start wearing them as earrings.  Anise has a warm licorice taste and is often used in Asian and Indian cuisine.

So the wine you use is entirely up to you. I picked this up because it was $3.99 at the grocery store.  My favorite red wine is pinot noir, but I wanted a more full bodied red to stand up to all of the other ingredients we were adding so I went with a cab.  Don't bother using an expensive wine - just one that you wouldn't mind drinking on its own.

All you need to do is throw all of the ingredients into a pitcher and stir.

It's best if you let it sit over night.

Fruity, full bodied, and delicious for winter.  Doesn't this make you want to cuddle by the fire with a glass of this?  Stay hungry!

Winter Sangria Recipe

1 Cup Spanish Brandy
1 Cup Sugar
4 Anise Stars
3 Cinnamon Sticks

Combine all ingredients and stir well to melt sugar.  Refrigerate overnight and serve over ice. About 12-16 Servings.  Enjoy :)

  2. Spanish brandy is sweet and heavy and is made from sherry. You could use regular brandy or even cognac.
